ChéQin is a shared space for a family: parents set up the account, and children use it through profiles the parent creates. Because children use ChéQin, we collect as little as the app can function on, and we never sell data or use it for advertising.
Who is responsible
The parent or guardian who creates the account is the ChéQin account holder. Child profiles are created and managed by that account holder, and children do not have their own separate logins.
What we collect
We collect only what a feature needs in order to work:
- Account details — your email address, display name, and the sign-in method you chose (email and password, Google, or Apple).
- Child profiles — the first name, age and gender you enter for each child, and the avatar chosen for them.
- Family details — your family name, invite code and time zone.
- Chores — chore titles and descriptions you write, their status, and any photo a child submits as proof of completion.
- Credits and rewards — credit balances, transaction history, and eggs or companions bought with credits earned in the app.
- Mood check-ins — the mood a child selects and when they selected it.
- Companion chat — messages a child sends to their in-app companion and the replies generated for them.
- Notifications — a device token so we can deliver push notifications, plus your notification preferences.
- Video calls — the technical information needed to connect a family call. We do not record or store calls.
What we do not collect
- We do not use third-party advertising, and we show no ads.
- We do not use third-party analytics or advertising SDKs.
- We do not track you across other apps or websites, and we do not build advertising profiles.
- We do not collect precise location.
- We do not record video or audio from family calls.
Why we collect it
- To create and secure your account and keep you signed in.
- To run the features you use — chores, credits, mood check-ins, the companion, and family video calls.
- To send the notifications you have turned on.
- To keep children safe by screening companion chat for harmful content, and to show parents a record of that chat.
- To diagnose faults and keep the service running reliably.
Children and the companion
ChéQin includes an AI companion a child can chat with. Every message is screened automatically before it reaches the child, and messages our safety checks flag are recorded for the parent to review.
A parent can read their child's companion chat history at any time, set a daily message limit, or turn the companion chat off entirely, from the parent controls in the app.
A child can report any companion message by pressing and holding it. Reports reach our safety team and appear in the parent's controls.
Companion messages are processed by Anthropic, the company behind Claude, in order to generate a reply. When a child completes a mood check-in, their first name, age and the mood they chose are sent to Anthropic in the same way so ChéQin can write a personal response. Nothing else about your family is sent. Anthropic acts as our processor, is contractually bound to protect this data to the same standard we are, may use it only to generate the reply, and does not use it to train its models.
A parent must agree to this before it happens. Companion chat is off until a parent turns it on, and the mood response is written without Anthropic unless that agreement is in place. It can be withdrawn at any time in Parent controls, which stops anything further being sent.
Who we share data with
We do not sell personal data and we do not share it for advertising. We use a small number of service providers who process data only on our instructions, under contracts that require them to protect it to the same standard set out in this policy and to use it for nothing else:
- Google Firebase — authentication, database, file storage and push notifications.
- Anthropic — generating companion chat replies and mood check-in responses. Only the message or the mood, with the child's first name and age; never their email, photos, chores or credits.
- Agora — connecting family video calls.
- Our hosting provider — running the ChéQin service itself.
How long we keep it
We keep your data for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account we delete it, as described below.
Deleting your account and data
You can delete your ChéQin account at any time from Account → Delete account, inside the app. No email or phone call is needed.
Deleting your account permanently removes your profile and sign-in details, your children's profiles, chores and any photos submitted as proof, credits and their history, mood check-ins, companion chat history, and your notification settings. If no other parent remains in your family, the family is deleted too.
This cannot be undone. If you would rather ask us to do it, or want a copy of your data first, write to hello@cheqin.app.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export or delete your personal data, and to object to or restrict how we use it. You can exercise the most common of these directly in the app; for anything else, contact us.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit. Access to production systems is limited to the people who need it to operate the service. No system is perfectly secure, so we encourage you to use a strong, unique password.
Changes to this policy
If we make a material change we will update the date at the top of this page and, where the change is significant, tell you in the app.
Contact us
Questions about privacy, or about your child's data, can be sent to hello@cheqin.app and we will respond promptly.
